Greenleaf Family Center and Family Hearing & Balance Center
are proud to announce a new educational hearing loss program for people with hearing loss and those closest to them – the R J Hearing Program!

The first workshop was held Saturday November 15, 2008, at the Greenleaf Family Center, 212 E. Exchange St, Akron. The next workshop is planned for January 24, 2009.

For nearly 100 years Greenleaf Family Center has been committed to building stronger communities by building healthier, happier families. We are counselors, providing guidance and treatment in times of need, we are educators, providing valuable skills and life lessons. Form car loans and drug abuse treatment to special programs for the deaf and hard of hearing families, our services are designed to help families at every critical point in their lives.

At Family Hearing & Balance Center, our audiologist will complete a full diagnostic hearing evaluation and consultation. It is our goal is to help you hear to the best of your ability and provide you with a Worry-Free Hearing Experience! We strive to make you and your family members feel comfortable. You will gain knowledge of all different types and styles of hearing aids from the basic to the most sophisticated 100% digital, leaving you with a clear understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Living with a hearing loss can be a challenge, but we firmly believe education can make all the difference between a life of silence and a world of sound. With today’s advanced hearing technologies and cutting-edge communication strategies, those with hearing loss can interact and connect to friends, family, school and new career opportunities.

It is easy to confuse speech, language, and communication; however, there are important differences. Much of daily life depends on the face-to-face exchange of ideas and information. In addition to oral speech and written language, other communication options, different forms of language and other strategies are useful for people with more severe hearing loss.

These strategies are not just for the hard of hearing, but everyone. Communication tips will allow a person with hearing loss and others involved in the conversation to effectively use these tips to receive as much information as possible. People with hearing loss often rely on visual cues for information. Some people have difficulty knowing where a sound is coming from. Others hear sounds, but may not be able to recognize the words that were spoken. All of these simple communication tips are effective and easy to do, but may require a conscious effort at first.

And that is the goal of the R J Hearing Program - to educate our community on hearing loss, how to use effective communication strategies and how we can move beyond the barriers that hearing loss often cause in our lives.
